Reflecting & Reflected

Project Note: <Reflecting & Reflected> is a metaphor for the continuity of thesis-antithesis-synthesis dialectic arising from group relations. This project began by researching hatred. The background is that those with differences such as political orientation, gender, religion, values, and nationality are getting more distant from each other in this phenomenon of filter bubbles and group polarization. The artist focuses on those who are ‘still’ able to harmonize from person to person, person to group, and group to group. These beings reflect each other, fuse different 'moral matrices', and create new possibilities in new positions.
Taeheon Lee, the artist, reduced 'hate' to 'self-loathing' and explored within himself. He found that he cannot completely cut out the parts he hates. In the process, he discovered a love letter of 'self-love' to 'self-loathing'. Based on his experience, he conducted a workshop exploring the relationship between self-loathing and social hatred; and applied the insights to the image and sound in this work.
<Reflecting & Reflected: less hate more love>는 집단 관계에서 발생하는 정-반-합 변증법의 연속에 대한 은유이다. 이 프로젝트는 혐오에 관해 탐구하며 시작되었다. 그 바탕엔 정치 성향, 젠더, 종교, 가치관, 국가의 차이를 가진 존재들이 필터 버블과 집단극화 현상 속에서 점차 서로 멀어지고 상대를 혐오하는 현상이 바탕에 있다. 작가는 개인-개인, 개인-집단, 집단-집단의 ‘아직은’ 화합할 수 있는 위치에 있는 존재들을 조명한다. 이러한 존재들은 서로 반영하여 서로 다른 ‘도덕적 매트릭스’를 융합하여 새로운 위치에서 새로운 가능성을 창조한다.
“이 프로젝트는 자기혐오에 대한 은밀한 러브레터입니다. ‘혐오를 멈춰라.’라고 하지만, 나는 그것이 가능할지 의문이었습니다. 그래서 나는 이 거대한 사회적 이슈를 자신의 이슈로 과감히 좁혀서, ‘자기혐오’를 이해하고 받아들일 것에서부터 풀어나가기 시작했죠. 사랑이 자존감의 반영이듯, 혐오도 자기혐오의 반영이라고 생각하기 때문이니까요. 그런데 자기혐오를 교정하려니 쉽지 않더라고요. 그것은 욕망처럼 끝없이 생성되고 발전하곤 했습니다. 그래서 내가 소화할 수 있는 만큼만, 이해하고 인정하며, 새로운 가능성을 모색했습니다. 결국 필요한 것은 ‘This is it’이라는 ‘인정’과 그것을 계속 품을 수 있는 ‘사랑’이었습니다. 그래 서 혐오하지 않는 것은 어쩌면 가설을 넘은 판타지 같다고 생각하게 되었습니다. 그럼에도 계속해 나가야 할 것입니다. 나를 위해, 나와 관계된 모든 사람-사물을 위해.”
